Rehabilitation Engineering is the application of engineering principles to improve the quality of life of people with impairment and disabilities. The Rehabilitation Engineering Centre was established in 1979 and is a registered NDIS provider as part of Metro North Hospital & Health Service.
The Rehabilitation Engineering Centre works to improve the quality of life of Queenslanders with disabilities through:-
a) Identification of technology requirements of people with complex equipment needs.
b) The design and manufacture of custom solutions when appropriate for clients with complex needs.
c) The provision of independent advice on rehabilitation technology solutions.
d) The provision of education related to rehabilitation technology solutions.
e) Participation in research and development in rehabilitation technology.
The Centre currently services approximately 460 clients per year with a range of high-level custom seating or mobility needs. It also provides training and support to allied health professionals in the selection and assessment of custom technology solutions for people with disabilities.
The service is non-diagnosis or age specific. Referrals are accepted from clients, their primary carers, primary therapists, nursing or medical staff. Referrals are triaged by the service based on impact on quality of life for the client.
