No referral is required to see a Psychologist. To get a Medicare rebate (10 rebates of $86.15 per calendar year), you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a referral from your Doctor. If you have a diagnosed Eating Disorder (includes Binge Eating Disorder) and an Eating Disorder Treatment Plan from your GP or Psychiatrist, you can obtain up to 40 Medicare rebates in a 12-month period. If you have private Health Insurance with Extras that includes Psychology, you can obtain a rebate if you don't have a Medicare referral. A HICAPS machine is available to process all payments and Medicare/Health Insurance rebates.
