Gold Coast Public Health Unit delivers services to protect and promote community health by preventing disease, illness, and injury. Core functions include communicable disease control, environmental health, immunisation, health surveillance and epidemiology, health promotion, community engagement, public health regulation, research, and emergency incident response. Communicable Disease Control: Prevent transmission of diseases between people, animals (zoonotic), and insects (vector-borne) through case management, contact tracing, and controlling clusters and outbreaks. Environmental Health: Monitor and enforce public health legislation covering tobacco, food safety, medicines and poisons, water quality, radiation safety, and general public health. Conduct risk assessments for physical, chemical, biological, and social hazards, whether naturally occurring or human-made. Immunisation: Deliver school and community vaccination programs, support nurse immunisers, investigate cold chain breaches and adverse events, and collaborate with partners to maintain high immunisation rates and reduce vaccine-preventable diseases. Health Surveillance & Epidemiology: Apply data-driven methods to understand disease causes, spread, and control. Monitor immunisation trends, conduct surveillance on communicable and non-communicable diseases, and identify potential outbreak sources. Health Promotion: Implement initiatives to keep communities healthy and connected. Work with the community in settings where they live, learn, work, and play to build capacity and empower individuals to improve health outcomes. Public Health Incident Response: Participate in multi-agency planning and response for disasters, disease outbreaks, pandemics, bioterrorism, and environmental or food contamination, focusing on prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.
