Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a parenting program that enhances the parent child interaction in order to reduce problematic behaviours in children and improve the well being of children and parents/carers. PCIT provides, on average, once weekly contact. The PCIT therapist observes the parent/carer child interactions via a one way mirror and coaches the parent/carer by communicating instructions and direct feedback via an earpiece. The parent is provided with information about how a child's behaviour is shaped and maintained by his or her social environment. Homework assignments between sessions are used to enhance skill development and parents are asked to devote 5 to 10 minutes a day to practicing the interactions with their child in order to enhance their skills. The program consist of the Relationship Enhancement Phase which focuses on establishing a warmer, more loving relationship between the parent/carer and child and the Additional Skills Phase where parents/carers are taught skills in how to direct their child, manage those behaviours most resistant to change, and provide safe effective discipline in response to non-compliance. This program is located in Maroochydore 5 days a week and at Lifeline Gympie two days per week on Thursday and Friday.
